Abstract: Information systems are critical to the worldwide insurance business, yet few major insurance companies believe they are well served by their current systems. Increasingly, companies are including Smalltalk as a strategic element of their future systems strategies. The insurance industry is a collection of companies and government agencies that provide risk management by sharing the costs of economic loss among a large number of people (for a price). Insurance is a service business with a variety of organizational types and business practices. Diversity is also increasing due to the number of technology options for systems implementation, the need to increase customer service and focus on new distribution channels, and pressure to rapidly improve the speed of delivery of new insurance products to market. Consequently, most large insurance companies seek practical frameworks for implementing new systems, and migrating existing systems into the diverse new business and technology environment.
