Abstract: Smalltalk computer language was originally intended to make the computer more accessible. However, although the language itself is simple, it is becoming common knowledge that becoming truly proficient with the Smalltalk environment is no simple achievement. The effectiveness of the training available today for objects and Smalltalk exceeds that of many of the other technologies. Today's mature training industry owes much to the 1980s "lunatic fringe" who were trying to do a lot when there was much less money being spent on Smalltalk. Those that provided the training, along with those being trained, learned a lot about what worked and what did not. Smalltalk Apprentice Program (STAP) is an intense educational effort in which learning takes place in the context of a real world project over two or three months with periods of isolation from the normal working environment. although the effectiveness of the innovative training with individual with individual and small groups of is impressive.
