Abstract: Now-a-days, the environmental water pollution and the associated hazardous heavy metals affect the human health and aquatic life. In particular, azo dye is mostly used in textile industries. The removal of hazardous dyes from the environmentally polluted waste water is an intense topic present days and this will certainly address the water scarcity in the near future. In this aspect, photocatalysis is a permanent solution for the removal of water pollution when compared with other conventional processes. In this paper, we expound on the results of the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye utilizing the zinc tungstate (ZnWO4) catalysts synthesized through co-precipitation approach with hexamethyl tetramine (HMTA) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as surfactants. The structural study confirmed the realization of monoclinic phase ZnWO4 in the synthesized product. The vibrational modes observed at 882 and 815 cm−1 are assigned to the stretching and bending modes of W–O and Zn–W–O bonds. The intensity of photoluminescence emission peaks of ZnWO4 nanoparticles is marginally diminished when increasing the amount of the HMTA and PVP, which may be due to the increasing separation rate of photogenerated carriers. The formation of spherical and seed-like nanoparticles as well as the nanocluster-like morphology was seen. The photocatalytic activity test confirmed the complete degradation of MB dye by ZnWO4 catalysts within 90 min. The highest degradation efficiencies of 88.6% and 83.3% were observed for ZnWO4 catalysts with 0.7 g of HMTA and 0.5 g of PVP surfactants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
