Abstract: The article focuses on functional programming languages. Functional languages are the subject of ongoing research in extending semantics and in implementation. Functional programming languages are based on lambda calculus. The simplicity of lambda calculus and its computational rules accounts for the simplicity of functional programming languages, which in turn makes programming far less error-prone. Functional languages have been used primarily in Artificial Intelligence applications, due to the heavy use of recursively defined data structures.
