| Abstract: | This article focuses on the role of faith and spirituality in the life of teenagers, as presented in young adult fiction. When religious people are depicted in young adult fiction, it is often as hypocrites or fanatics. In Richard Peck's "The Last Safe Place on Earth," fundamentalist Christians are champions of censorship and sinister brainwashers, preying upon the innocent and naive. In Linda Crew's "Brides of Eden," a preacher comes to Corvallis, Oregon, in 1903 and lures townspeople into a religious cult of sexual seduction, murder and suicide. "Armageddon Summer," by Jane Yolen and Bruce Coville, depicts religious faith as extreme fanaticism in a story of a family following their fiery preacher to the top of mountain to await Aramageddon. There is a small but growing group of young adult novels that successfully capture the struggle of spiritually minded teens to sort out their questions about personal faith and stay true to the spiritual paths they choose to follow. One such book is Gary Scmidt's "The Sin Eater." |
