Abstract: In an investigation of student and teacher attitudes regarding daily grading in Japanese language classes, Choi and Samimy (2002) found that some students and teachers were concerned with the consistency and fairness of daily grading. Choi and Samimy recommended in-service training to ensure interrater reliability in daily grading. Given that empirical research has not yet investigated the inter-rater reliability that can be expected of teachers who have completed training in daily grading, the current study investigates the reliability of daily grades assigned by teachers who have received such training. In this study, Japanese language teachers who have been trained in daily grading are assigned to observe a class of students that they are not currently teaching and assign daily grades to those students. For each class, the daily grades assigned by the observing teacher are compared with those assigned by the teacher who taught the class. This study finds that overall, daily grading can be conducted with adequate reliability among trained teachers. Limitations of the study are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
