Abstract: The article discusses the autonomy of three U.S. science teachers in responding to the needs of their learners. Topics covered include Darian Robbins's address of classroom problems and building of the classroom around his priorities, Stephen Young's focus on learning and not on achievement and on student efforts in making progress in what they know, and Laurence Woodruff's acceptance of responsibility for successes and failures in his exercise of autonomy in the classroom.
