Abstract: Drawing on theories of rhetorical agency, the author argues that we rethink directed self-placement (DSP) as rhetorically distributed work that reflects collectively shaped agency within and beyond the immediate assessment ecology. To acknowledge DSP as a rhetorical act through ethical and responsible practices, the author proposes a rhetorical model of DSP that aims to fully recognize student agents' position, deliberation, negotiation, and appropriation in relation to the placement decisions, and to engage students in a "rhetorical rehearsal" before signing the placement contract.
