Abstract: This article outlines the facts that are necessary for successful AIDS education. The term AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Each of these words has a meaning that helps explain what AIDS is and how it works. Acquired refers to something that people get from outside themselves. The definition of the word immune is invulnerable or protected. The next word in AIDS is deficiency. Deficiency means not enough of something, a shortage. In the term AIDS, deficiency is teamed up with immune, meaning that the body does not have enough immunity to fight off germs and diseases effectively. The final word, syndrome, refers to a group of symptoms that combine to demonstrate a particular condition or disease. In the case of AIDS, these symptoms include the presence of HIV in the body and the deficient immune system, as well as a number of opportunistic infections, such as Kaposi's sarcoma, pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), and lymphoma, that take advantage of the body's weak state to get a foothold. When enough of these symptoms get together in one body, the diagnosis of AIDS is made. The term AIDS, all of these words--Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome--together, refers to a group of symptoms that people get from somewhere outside themselves and that weaken the bodys ability to defend itself against diseases. AIDS does not infect people, but HIV does. HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. Human, obviously, means that this is a virus that affects humans, or people. HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. Human, obviously, means that this is a virus that affects humans, or people. The second word, immunodeficiency, combines two of the words used in AIDS, and means a weak defense system for the body. Virus, of course, is the name for a microscopic agent that causes disease.
