Abstract: Queer and nonbinary middle grade authors are exploring the experiences of queer and nonbinary kids in their novels, specifically focusing on the theme of crushes. These authors aim to provide representation that was lacking in their own middle school reading experiences. The novels feature characters who navigate their feelings for others while also dealing with other aspects of their identities, such as being neurodivergent or part of a tight-knit friend group. The authors emphasize the importance of allowing their characters to experience big emotions, including joy and embarrassment, and highlight the innocence and intensity of first love during the middle school years.
