| Abstract: | Engaging students in playful science education experiences can foster meaningful three-dimensional learning and enthusiastic student participation. This article outlines the integration of play into an earth science engineering challenge within a fourth-grade setting. The 5E lesson framework provided a structured approach to a simulated real-world issue wherein students were tasked to Save the Zoo! from an impending flood. Within collaborative teams, students took on the role of engineers, using natural materials to divert the flood water from a miniature staged zoo. This hands-on experience facilitated active problem-solving, critical thinking, and real-world application, resulting in a meaningful play-based science experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
