Abstract: The present study analyzes the construction of context in noun recategorization along with a comparison of Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. It is confirmed through cross-linguistic data that the construction of context in noun recategorization in both languages consists of two phases with a similar nature: (a) the procedural units guide the construction of context and (b) the supplementary contextual data constitute the overall interpretation of the utterance. However, such a process places greater emphasis on the grammatical behaviors of the noun in Spanish but relies on the knowledge of the actual entities the nouns represent in Chinese. In addition, the encyclopedic knowledge required for the construction of the recategorized context in the two languages presents distinctive characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
