Abstract: The article discusses the evolution of the Henry Ford Community College Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 1650, highlighting its role in academic collective bargaining and shared governance over its sixty-year history. Established in 1966, Local 1650 represents full-time faculty and has focused on ensuring faculty involvement in academic policy-making, which was solidified through a successful strike for shared governance. Recent developments include the establishment of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) officer, the creation of a faculty senate committee on artificial intelligence (AI), and the introduction of a comprehensive parental leave policy, all driven by newer members advocating for inclusivity and adaptability in response to societal changes and challenges.
