| Abstract: | This article focuses on integrating community-engaged art practices into educational curricula to empower marginalized students by valuing their cultural capital, rooted in Black feminist theory (BFT) and culturally sustaining pedagogy (CSP). It highlights collaborative artmaking as a means to foster communal care, critical dialogue, and social justice advocacy within diverse learning environments. The author presents examples of projects inspired by Mending Walls, a community mural initiative, implemented in both a predominantly Black, economically disadvantaged elementary school and an independent school for students with learning dis/abilities, demonstrating how art can build relationships and affirm students’ identities. The article argues that such approaches challenge deficit-based education models and promote transformative, community-connected learning experiences. [Extracted from the article] |
