| Abstract (English): | This study explores the social representations that students at the Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Xalapa (ITSX) and a public state university, the Universidad Veracruzana (UV), hold about Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). The knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of male and female students regarding massive open online courses were analyzed. Based on the theory of social representations, a questionnaire was developed and sent by email to a representative sample of 575 students. The results indicate a clear difference between the two groups, as ITSX students, unlike UV students, possess more information about these courses, consider them to be of higher quality, view them as useful for their academic training since they receive academic credit for taking them, and regard them as an important option for their lifelong learning.
