| Abstract: | Purpose: This yearlong qualitative case study sought to understand the lived experiences and the role of family and community among Latino boys in an after-school physical activity program. Method: Four preservice teachers facilitated the REACH after-school program and contributed weekly to a "coaches journal." To understand the lived experience of the participants, 23 boys participated and contributed weekly journal entries. Ten boys were interviewed at the end of the program. Data were independently coded using constant comparison. Results: The results of this study are presented through two themes: (1) family and community influences and (2) role modeling. Discussion: The after-school program provided a safe space that helped discussion and deconstruction of different barriers to physical activity. Family dynamics and adult role models played a role in the boys' engagement in physical activity and pushed them to give back to their community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
