| Abstract: | Training plays a critical role for resource parents in not only being able to start parenting but also continuing to parent and maintain successful placements for youth in foster care. An important consideration in evaluating training program effectiveness is training fidelity, yet there is relatively little research documenting the relationship between training fidelity and resource parent knowledge. This study examines the association between aspects of training fidelity related to curricular adherence and resource parent knowledge following participation in the National Training and Development Center (NTDC) training program. This was a cross-sectional quantitative study of 1,037 resource parents who participated in a large, federally-funded evaluation of seven U.S. states and one tribe. Authors conducted descriptive statistics of participant characteristics and used regression analysis to examine the association between participant knowledge and three aspects of training fidelity focused on curricular adherence while controlling for multiple sociodemographic characteristics. The three aspects of fidelity were significantly associated with knowledge gain among participants in the sample. Age, gender, and sexual orientation of prospective resource parents were the only sociodemographic characteristics found to be related to acquisition of knowledge after completing the training program. These findings reinforce that aspects of fidelity related to curricular adherence comprise an important area of resource parent training program implementation and evaluation, along with several implications for future research and policy work.
