Abstract: The article presents a study of attitudes and concerns about AIDS of nursing personnel attending conferences on AIDS in Pennsylvania. Participants of the study were professional nursing staff, most of whom were knowledgeable about the disease. Most of them felt the need to know more about HIV, others expressed personal worries about its transmission, while a sizeable percentage showed irrational fears. These fears are mostly centered around fear of casual contact transmission such as blood transmission and transmission through sexual activity. The study showed a strong relationship between homophobia and AIDS fears. These findings indicate the need for the promotion of AIDS education among health care providers.
