| Abstract: | One of Murdoch University's regional campuses is in the Rockingham community, some 50 kilometres from the centre of the capital city of Perth, Western Australia. The Rockingham campus is also situated with a corridor which houses the least tertiary educated communities in Australia. In 1992, following Australian Federal Government initiatives to increase the participation rates of under-represented groups at universities, Murdoch University, (together with other universities Australia wide), implemented the UniQuest Program, an equity based program centred on talented but disadvantaged students. This paper discusses how the School of Engineering at the Rockingham Campus of Murdoch University was able to successfully move away from the cultural barriers associated with equity policies and the language of 'disadvantage' which has become synonymous with education deficiencies and, highlights how beneficial it is to both students and faculty to move away from this type of discourse.
