Abstract: The article offers information about the Big Read Scheme in Charleston, South Carolina. The program was officially launched in 2006 to encourage and to celebrate the reading habits of great American literature. It is made possible with the collaboration of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest aimed in getting teens and adults engaged in reading. It revealed that on 2006, the first official year of the program, seventy-two communities were selected to participate. In 2007, the participating communities grow to 117 and participants of the program receive a grant of $5,000 to $20,000 to implement and promote literary-themed programs such as read-a-thon, film screening, author visits and book discussions.
