Abstract: The article traces the beginnings of multilingualism in the U.S. It states that multilingualism resulted from the immigration of indigenous groups. Throughout the U.S. history, the trend has reportedly been that of openness about multiple languages followed by "English Only" types of discussion. Pronouncements during the political campaign by President Barack Obama are considered positive by the author in terms of valuing a multilingual future.
