Abstract: The authors examine how the poor mathematics achievement of students in the U.S. could affect the preparation of early childhood education teachers on how to teach the subject in early childhood settings. They emphasize the need to address the difference in mathematics performance between children from vulnerable populations and those who are not. The authors claim that early childhood educators could improve mathematics outcome by considering the nature of mathematics experiences of children.
