| Abstract: | The article provides research on the impact of service learning in U.S. schools as an instructional tool to teach students the value of active participation in their community and civics. The article presents several social studies projects geared to this end. Topics include the value of experiential learning, service learning's goal of teaching civics, and service learning projects based on the film "Pay It Forward" and the U.S. Constitution. Also discussed are the results of curricula integration attempts within real-world contexts and the impact of the projects on social studies teachers' ability to teach civics. |
