Abstract: The article looks at the psychological and social conditions of poor people in the U.S., as of 2013. The author says that poor people are typically invisible to the non-poor and in U.S. culture generally, creating the conditions for them to be stereotyped. He expresses the view that all people have equally complex emotional lives composed of the same set of drives and feelings. He discusses individuals he has come to know, focusing on their efforts to advance their education and describing emotional obstacles such as despair. He looks at the significant role of community colleges in providing a second chance at education to poor adults and discusses government policy toward them.
