Abstract: Truly ecofriendly and safe light‐emitting diode (LED) lighting in the built and urban environments requires the use of LED lights emitting significantly lower amount of blue light than conventional, first‐generation white LED lights. Thanks to substantial technology progress in the design and manufacturing of LEDs, this is now possible at the same providing vastly enhanced illumination, faithfully reproducing hues with no glare or flickering effects. Driven by awareness of the global relevance of the blue‐light problem caused by LED lighting technology and by the precautionary principle, this study provides practical guidelines for the uptake of safe and sustainable LED lighting aimed at policy makers, energy managers and users of LED‐based lighting systems. Its outcomes may be useful to inform expanded education in energy management, in which energy, technology, and health aspects are merged with social and economic aspects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
