Abstract: Conventional machining technologies are no longer able to meet the increasing demand for items with high surface finish made of hard and brittle materials. Nevertheless, effectively and cost-effectivelyprocessing these materials, which are tricky to machine, has consistently posed a daunting issue over the past few decades. Thus, this study offers a comprehensive review thorough assessment of the vibration-assisted polishing (VAP) process. This article discusses on various polishing methods. The historical background and present state of VAP are provided. Then, this study analyzes the working principle, various materials, and surface quality improvements during VAP. The results showed that the Lissajous trajectory with ellipse is an appropriate path for VAP. Besides, the results revealed that there is a significant reduction on the cutting force and temperature. It found that the tool life is prolonged, and the surface quality and machining accuracy are improved in comparison with traditional cutting techniques. A growth trend of VAP is discussed. Finally, benefits of hybrid VAP techniques are analyzed, and they are potential technologies to enhance the mechanical characteristics, surface roughness, and fatigue resistance of hard and brittle materials.
