| Abstract: | This study investigated the effectiveness of Individual Counseling and a Parent Educational Program in modifying underachieving behavior and measured personality traits, peer relationships, and perceived family attitudes. The sample was comprised of fifth-grade students, male and female. The treatment duration was an academic year. The underachievers were identified by predicting their grade point average using a prediction equation. If a discrepancy was found between actual achievement and predicted level of achievement, the student was identified as an underachiever. The underachievers were grouped into two groups, individual counseling and parent treatment groups, on the basis of testing. These two groups were further subdivided by random sampling into a treatment group and control group. The change from pre- to post-testing on the variables of the study was analyzed by using the analysis of covariance. The overall finding of the study indicated that neither of the two treatment approaches resulted in any significantly measurable change. The few differences that were found were attributed to the chance factor. The overall conclusion was that the treatment conditions of individual counseling and parent education did not result in any significant improvement in achievement, measured personality traits, peer relations, and perceived parental attitudes.
