| Abstract: | The importance of communication between students and their educators is discussed by a teacher of communication. It is strongly suggested that success or failure in college depends on communication--"interdependent efforts of people in a relationship to generate common meaning." Chapters include: Communicating at College; Are Students Persons; Education as Communication; Listening as Other-Affirmation; Honest Messages as Other-Affirmation; The Ecology of Academic Audiences; and Action, Reaction, and Inaction in Higher Education. Focus is on examples from the students' immediate campus environment in challenging students to question their role in the educational process. Written for and tested in interpersonal communication courses, the book is also appropriate for teacher education courses, "orientation to college life" courses, and for college counseling centers. Appendices include letters written by the author to participants in intensive five-day workshops in interracial communication, and a current description for sections of the basic interpersonal communications course at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
