| Abstract: | This document provides a profile of aging and old age in Ghana. It covers aging trends and their implications for development. It is noted that, although the population aged 60 and over in Ghana is estimated to rise from 286,000 in 1960 to 2,425,000 in 2025, the aging of the population will not get under way until well after 2025. It is suggested that aging trends in Ghana will have a number of developmental implications and socioeconomic consequences, including a growing demand for specialized services and the weakening of the traditional family and community support systems for the elderly; age selective migration from the rural to urban areas; and reduced opportunities for older persons to remain economically active. This document also examines: (1) traditional beliefs associating old age and aging with dignity, wisdom, knowledge, respect, and obedience in Ghana; (2) the modernizing influences on these beliefs, including the effects of formal education, industrialization, migration, Christianity and Islam, and technology; (3) the current status of the elderly in Ghanaian society in terms of education, training, employment, income, and assets; (4) the living arrangements of the elderly; (5) the relationship of the elderly with family members; (6) the organized support systems for the elderly by the government, the family, and voluntary organizations; and (7) community participation and social networks.
