| Abstract: | This book presents a curriculum to educate students about the risk of AIDS and HIV infection. The opening chapters of the book presents a discussion of: how teachers can create an environment of support for an AIDS education program; the political and educational implications of winning principal, district, and parental support for an AIDS curriculum; facts and information about HIV and its transmission; and concrete guidance on such issues as abstinence, condom distribution, prejudice, and personal bias. A detailed AIDS curriculum is outlined, focusing on age-appropriate content for students in grades K-12. Four chapters cover: individual and group activities and exercises; influencing students' attitudes and behaviors by helping them to recognize problem situations in which risks might arise, along with the skills students need to protect themselves in such situations; a series of decision-making skills that students can practice in order to make responsible decisions when faced with the prospect of sexual activity; and modeling and practicing skills in the classroom through activities such as role-playing, peer education, and the use of drama.
