| Abstract: | Research on effective teaching and learning shows that when students set and monitor their own learning goals, it significantly narrows achievement gaps. While teacher-written objectives are important for clarity, when these objectives are re-written as personal statements, they evolve from what a teacher needs to teach to what students want to learn. This brief is filled with tools and strategies for navigating the transition from teacher-written to student-defined learning objectives including: (1) Unlocking the "So That" Factor: Spark intrinsic motivation and allow students to connect lessons to their own aspirations by encouraging them to add "so that" to rewritten objectives; and (2) Real-World Examples: Get practical guidance and strategies for seamlessly integrating student-identified objectives and success criteria into your classroom. The brief includes five guiding principles that foster a collaborative learning environment that encourages growth and mastery while placing student voice at the forefront. |
