| Abstract: | An increasing number of adolescents are struggling with mental health related disorders including anxiety, depression, substance abuse, or suicide. While positive psychologists and researchers continue to search for possible solutions, an increasing number of studies point to the impact that exploring and eventually finding purpose has on an individual's overall health and well-being. Using Bronfenbrenner's (1976) bioecological theory of human development as a conceptual framework, the purpose of this study was to examine participant beliefs about their educational environments in high school and college, and determine to what extent beliefs predicted a commitment to purpose. Participants included 91 college-age students from public and nonpublic institutions located in the Midwest region of the United States. In addition to demographic variables, four themes were identified via thematic coding as educational factors that had an impact on adolescent formation of purpose: school-based activities, positive relationships, faith-based activities, and classroom environment. The independent samples t-test analysis for gender and one-way ANOVA for year in college were not statistically significant; however, the independent samples t-tests for high school type and college type were statistically significant in whether or not participants found a satisfying purpose in life. The logistic regression indicated high school type and participant involvement in faith-based activities were statistically significant predictors of finding a satisfying purpose in life. Implications for school leaders and teachers are discussed, as well as topics for future research. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
