| Abstract: | Creative spaces and experimental practices being used by teachers can create intrinsic motivation in students. Previous research has shown that intrinsic motivation in students can be cultivated using student interests while also finding a balance for creating challenges for the students while also not making something so challenging that the students feel frustrated. Curriculums such as Choice Based Art Education (CBAE) and Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) create spaces within the art room for students to explore their interests. I used four high school level art teachers within the Philadelphia school district as participants in my research. These participants confirmed much of what previous research has said but also showed the importance of other things as well. There is major importance on the relationship that a teacher can build with their students at the high school level. Treating high school students with mutual respect and creating a safe and comfortable environment allows for students to succeed but also to fail and thus not be afraid to try and to push themselves. |
