| Abstract: | R.S. 17:7(28) requires the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) to annually report the results of teacher exit interviews conducted by local school systems. The purpose of the interviews and this report is to gather information about teachers' reasons for exiting their current positions that could prove useful in developing strategies to improve teacher retention. BESE is required to report the findings to the Louisiana House and Senate Education Committees by January 15 of each year. The findings of the 2023-2024 Teacher Exit Survey show the following: (1) the total teacher workforce has soared to its highest level in over a decade; (2) the rate of teachers exiting current positions from traditional Louisiana school systems decreased by two percentage points; and (3) the number of candidates who completed a Louisiana teacher preparation program has increased for the first time since the reporting of the teacher exit survey began in 2012-2013. |
