Abstract: The stability and expertise of the teaching force are the bedrock of student success. Yet, school districts across the nation are grappling with a persistent teacher attrition crisis that undermines student achievement, disrupts school communities, and incurs significant financial costs. Addressing teacher attrition is not a single initiative but a sustained, systemic commitment to making a district the best possible place for educators to work and build a career. This toolkit is designed to provide a strategic and actionable framework for addressing the root causes of teacher attrition. It moves beyond temporary fixes to offer systemic solutions that build a sustainable and rewarding teaching profession. It is organized into five distinct parts, each addressing a critical lever for reducing teacher attrition and improving retention. Concrete tools, research-backed strategies, and reflective exercises are provided to guide district leaders from understanding the foundational issues to implementing specific, high-impact strategies. This is the essential work of ensuring that every student, in every classroom, has the consistent, high-quality instruction they deserve.
