| Abstract: | The Tennessee Department of Education releases this report annually to highlight the progress of Tennessee's public charter schools during the previous academic year. This year's report provides information relative to the operation and viability of public charter schools for the 2023-24 school year. In compliance with state statute, the report provides information relative to student enrollment, academic performance, and student characteristics. During the 2023-24 school year, public charter schools showed adaptability and growth and continued to grow in number and student enrollment. Three new schools opened during the 2023-24 school year which brought the number of public charter schools to 115, and slightly fewer students (44,361) were enrolled compared to the 2022-23 school year (44,401); however, student academic achievement increased. Academic performance data for the 2023-24 school year shows that approximately 75% of public charter schools earned composite Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System (TVAAS) levels of 3 or higher, indicating that students in these schools made expected or greater than expected academic progress. Furthermore, the percentage of charter school students that met or exceeded grade level expectations on state assessments increased for all subjects compared to 2022-23 data. These improvements are a testament to the dedication of charter school educators and administrators in fostering environments that support student achievement and growth. |
