| Abstract: | High-quality and representative educators are essential for student success, yet systemic barriers continue to limit access to strong teacher preparation programs--particularly for candidates from low-income backgrounds and candidates of color--resulting in far too many students lacking access to the exceptional educators they deserve. This inequitable access not only deprives today's students of rich perspectives that are crucial for their growth and success, but it also reflects the urgent need to cultivate the representative talent needed to meet the demands of the nation's teacher workforce. To address this gap, EdTrust and the Tennessee Educators of Color Alliance (TECA) conducted a series of interviews with 32 apprentices of color in Tennessee and Texas. Participants reflected on their introduction to the program, highlighted the value and challenges of their job-embedded apprenticeship, shared insights about mentorship, underscored the critical role of financial supports, and called for clearer, more consistent program communication. Based on these interviews, this report features several recommendations for program leaders to better support candidates. Investing in high-quality educator pathways demonstrates a commitment to ensuring that all students have skilled teachers who are well-prepared and deeply connected to their communities. To achieve this, passionate individuals of all backgrounds must have access to seamless, affordable, and flexible pathways that effectively prepare them to succeed and stay in the profession. Therein lies the promise of registered teacher apprenticeship programs (RTAPs). [This paper was created with Tennessee Educators of Color Alliance (TECA).] |
