| Abstract: | The U.S. Department of Education's Full-Service Community Schools program aims to expand the reach of the community school approach by providing grants to school districts, community-based organizations, and universities. These grantees support partner schools that implement the community school approach with the goal of providing coordinated, comprehensive supports to children and their families. This snapshot examines the challenges grantees and their partner schools reported facing in the first year of implementing their grants. Surveys of grantees and their partner schools suggest that it was very challenging for many grantees and their partner schools to engage families, combine funding streams, and create data systems to support the community school approach. In addition, this snapshot explores whether schools received technical assistance or support from grantees or other entities to help implement the community school approach. Most partner schools sought help from other entities, such as the school district central office, to implement the community school approach. Although relatively few schools received technical assistance directly from their grantee organizations, those that did reported that this assistance was relevant to a range of potential needs. |
