| Abstract: | The MTF surveys provide the opportunity to ask respondents about consequences they believe are associated with their substance use. These questions are currently included in MTF school-based surveys of adolescents (Miech et al., 2025) and in MTF Panel surveys of adults ages 19 to 65 (Patrick et al., 2025). Some substance-specific consequence survey questions indicate symptoms related to substance use disorder (SUD)--specifically, disordered use of alcohol, cannabis, or a combined "other drug use" category. Such questions (hereafter referred to as "MTF SUD symptom indicators") can be combined into separate variables indicating possible symptoms of alcohol use disorder (AUD), cannabis use disorder (CUD), and other drug use disorder (ODUD) following diagnostic criteria set by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition Text Revision or DSM-5-TR (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). As will be emphasized throughout this report, these combined variables (referred to as "MTF SUD criteria sums") only indicate possible SUD symptoms and are not equivalent to a clinical diagnosis. However, researchers, clinicians, policy makers, and others involved with prevention and intervention can use the MTF SUD criteria sums to obtain important insights into how self-perceived SUD symptoms may change over historical time, across development, and with other important covariates. Coded MTF AUD, CUD, and ODUD criteria sums will be provided on forthcoming MTF Panel datasets for ages 18 to 65 accessible through the MTF Panel Series page on the National Addiction and Health Data Archive Program (NAHDAP) website. The data area also included in the MTF Longitudinal Panel annual report (Patrick et al., 2025). (MTF SUD criteria sums are not provided on the cross-sectional 12th grade datasets available on through NAHDAP.) This report aims to provide researchers with the knowledge necessary to responsibly and appropriately use MTF data addressing SUD symptoms. To this end, the authors briefly review the history of SUD as defined by the APA and describe the MTF SUD symptom indicators and how they map onto the current diagnostic criteria. Then, the authors provide a brief description of the cleaning and coding procedures used to create the MTF SUD criteria sums. |
