Abstract: This study investigates the direct effects of theoretical teaching methods, practical teaching methods and school-enterprise cooperations on engineering innovation ability among higher vocational education students in Henan, China. Using the Triple Helix Model as a framework, the research examines the dynamic collaboration between academia, industry and government in fostering innovation ecosystems within engineering education. Data from 409 students across 13 vocational institutions were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling via AMOS. The findings from hypothesis testing provide clear insights with theoretical teaching methods having a weak and statistically insignificant effect on engineering innovation ability, highlighting the need for more practical integration, practical teaching methodologies show a significant positive effect on engineering innovation ability and reinforcing the value of hands-on, application-based learning in fostering innovation. Moreover, school-enterprise cooperation demonstrates the strongest positive effect on engineering innovation ability, reinforcing the critical role of real-world industry partnerships in enhancing students' innovative capabilities. These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, educators and industry stakeholders in Henan, suggesting a focus on practical, collaborative approaches to better prepare graduates to meet the dynamic demands of the technological landscape.
