Abstract: Clinical practice is complex and requires a consistent assessment process to effectively navigate student evaluation. Nursing programs must ensure that assessment methods measure entry-to-practice competencies. A clear description of expectations and a consistent approach to the evaluation of student performance is required. A quality improvement project was conducted to modify existing practices for evaluating student clinical performance. The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses competencies were used as a foundation for a redesigned clinical evaluation tool using standardized behavioural indicators and a complementary weekly reflection and anecdotal notes document (RAND). Two priorities guided the redesign: clear expectations and building capacity for reflection. The redesigned evaluation tool and associated RAND provide clear expectations for student performance in practice, a foundation for comprehensive feedback, and a means to build capacity for student reflection.
