Abstract: Understanding and accepting that many students feel alienated from the subject of mathematics supports the use of specialized approaches. This article details how one specific mathematical modeling task integrated principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to create an environment where even reluctant students felt like they belonged. The principles of UDL support the development of engaging mathematical tasks. The authors provide an example of how this framework was applied to a middle school task.
