| Abstract: | This study tracked the development of environmental understanding and sensitivity among 550 seventh- to ninth-graders in South Korea. A performance assessment incorporating mind mapping was performed to assess environmental understanding, defined as the capacity to analyze ecological chain relationships and apply environmental knowledge. A self-reported rating scale was used to assess environmental sensitivity, defined as the awareness of and empathy toward preserving life and the natural environment. Latent growth modeling indicated nonlinear growth in environmental understanding, but a constant decline in environmental sensitivity. Further analysis revealed that the growth trajectories were not linked despite the correlations observed initially between environmental understanding and sensitivity. These findings highlight the need for distinct yet integrated educational strategies to address environmental understanding and sensitivity among adolescents. |
