| Abstract: | The University of Evansville (UE) is a small liberal arts college in southern Indiana. Through a unique four-year partnership between UE's School of Education and Dexter Elementary School, powerful social studies activities are delivered by preservice teachers to inner-city schoolchildren. The purpose of the afterschool social studies club experience is threefold. First, experiential social studies activities are delivered to elementary school students, allowing them to spend more quality time with this important content area. Second, the club experience provides preservice teachers with opportunities to develop student-centered and collaborative activities that tap into the social power of learning with peer groups, something beyond a traditional textbook approach. Third, the student population in this elementary education program consists of predominantly white/non-Hispanic students, many of whom grew up in rural areas. The afterschool club projects, which are highly interactive and transferable to many such partnerships, are detailed, along with the multiple benefits for both the elementary students and preservice teachers.
