Abstract: The authors' association goes back more than 40 years, when they were both starting doctoral studies in special education for students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) at the University of Kansas. In this article, the authors provide a balanced (albeit biased) account of the good and the bad, including some of the many achievements they have seen in the field of EBD, as well as some of their failures and missteps. They present things they think of as significant accomplishments in the field during the past 40-odd years, as well as some of the obstacles and setbacks. They hope that this discussion might germinate some ideas that those who have active years ahead may be inclined to pursue. After commenting on their early years in the field and accomplishments of past decades, the authors turn to some issues to consider in the future and outline what they see as major concerns to be addressed in each area.
