| Abstract: | The State Early Childhood Policy Leadership Forum seeks to build state capacity to develop and strengthen statewide, cross-system early childhood policies and programs. The Forum provides intense leadership retreats, professional development opportunities, policy discussions, and one-on-one technical assistance for individuals who are leading efforts to improve state early childhood policy. In this article, Forum Fellows share what they have learned as they pioneer new and better ways to support the care and education of young children. The authors describe ten recommendations based on the Fellows experiences: (1) Understand the history of the early care and education field. (2) Know the research and how to use it. (3) Communicate. (4) Build diplomacy skills. (5) Develop support networks. (6) Make time for yourself. (7) Keep perspective. (8) Stay flexible. (9) Know the limits of your authority, resources, and support base. (10) Step back; look at the big picture (but still worry about the details). |
