Abstract (English): In this article, the authors highlight that, contrary to what has been believed until recently, the strictly vegetarian population whose diet is based on plants (vegetables, greens, whole grains, legumes, fruits, seeds, and seaweed), typical of temperate or mediterranean climate, does not suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency. They propose that, similar to herbivorous animals, vitamin B12 is mainly provided by bacterial biosynthesis occurring in the small intestine, especially in the ileum, thanks to acidophilic microbiota (bifidobacteria and lactobacilli) that colonize the small intestine early in life. This function is supported by prolonged breastfeeding, emphasizing the importance of the bifidus factor that promotes the growth of bifidobacteria. It is significant that vitamin B12 absorption occurs precisely in the terminal ileum. In other words, in strict vegetarians, the vitamin is absorbed in the same place where it is produced.
