Yet hundreds more came within an inch of winning the coveted 007 role - the pinnacle for so many actors. When Sean Connery announced that the 1967 Bond movie You Only Live Twice would be his last outing as 007, the search for his replacement took producers Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman in some bizarre directions.
