| Abstract: | Restricting alcohol consumption on campus is a measure often used by college administrators to prevent alcohol abuse and alcohol-related problems. The effect of dry campus policies on alcohol consumption and alcohol-related problems, however, remains poorly understood. This report will compare characteristics of two dry campuses with descriptions of general college drinking trends with respect to students 'demographic and social/academic characteristics. At two Western universities, 9,073 undergraduates aged 18 and older were surveyed between 2000 and 2004. Drinking and alcohol-related problems found on the dry campuses were similar to national trends on college campuses. Results suggest campus alcohol policies limit drinking on campus but do not prevent previously identified demographic and academic college drinking patterns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
