| Abstract: | Joan told me among other things that the grandmother talked with a thick German accent, as indicated by Joan imitating her. Approximately one week ago after she had expressed some jealousy to the charge nurse on her ward, describing the nurse as having lived where she, Joan, had never lived - and I had said to her that she, Joan, had four children while the nurse has never had children, Joan very strongly emphasized that she herself has never lived and, emphasizing with great feeling, "I was born here" - meaning at Chestnut Lodge. She is said to have beaten Joan severely, physically and certainly verbally, accusing Joan of all manner of guilt for everything that went on in the world. When it was time for me to leave as the administrator of Joan's unit, she was one of the patients it was hardest to say goodbye to.The family visit in July gave me a different picture of Joan.
